Boggle Hole 2024

Day 1

We arrived at Boggle Hole at about 12pm, after a generally smooth journey. The children took their cases down to the centre and then had their lunch. We then met Clare & Jess who are our leaders for the week. We changed into our wellies and headed into the woods. The woods had a range of activities; including a mud kitchen, leaf weaving, potion making, boat racing and running in the stream. The children had a fantastic, slightly wet time in the woods creating buddies for the Boggle out of natural clay. Their creativity was awesome! After the woods, the children went into their rooms for the first time and started to get settled. It was then time for dinner which was a choice of pasta, macaroni cheese or jacket potato. Our final activity of the day was pebble painting. It was wonderful to see all the children taking their time and carefully considering their designs - a lovely keepsake to take home. Roll on day 2!

Day 2

The children woke up just before 7 and headed down for breakfast. Our first adventure of the day was a walk along the cliff line to Robin Hood’s Bay. The children enjoyed looking at the stunning scenery and trying to spot different things in the sea. Once we got to Robin Hood’s Bay, we went into our groups and learned a little about smuggling. The children were given a secret mission to smuggle sweets without the adults seeing and also set a challenge to follow a map and look for different key points around the bay such as interesting doors or plaques on walls. The children were fab during this challenge and enjoyed the playground halfway round. After lunch back at Boggle Hole, we learned about the different creatures we might find in rock pools. We then headed to the shore and explored the rock pools. This was exciting for the kids and they found so many wonderful sea animals. Finally, after dinner, the children enjoyed toasting marshmallows, drinking hot chocolate, singing songs and hearing stories around a fire pit. A lovely way to end the day! Here’s to a good night sleep before day 3!

Day 3

A slightly rainy day did not stop us from more adventures on this, day 3. We started the day with breakfast and then remained inside to create lighthouses out of a range of junk modelling materials. The children worked brilliantly as a team and had to aim to make a lighthouse that would withstand the stormy weather which may have included teachers squirting water guns to make “rain!” After this, the children foraged for leaves and twigs ready for the evening activity. After lunch, we had discussions about different fossils we may find on the beach and then headed out to look for them. The majority of children were successful in finding a range of fossils, including ammonites, belemnites, cricoids and devil’s toenails. A quick extra activity was to build a tower of stones as tall as possible. There was then time for showers and some downtime before heading down for dinner which was a choice between jacket potatoes or meatballs with pasta. Finally, our evening activity was to create mini beasts out of the natural materials that we had collected earlier. The children really impressed  us with their creativity and out-of-the-box thinking. Just look at some of the creations! Excited for what awaits us on day 4!

Day 4

We have had a great final full day. The day started with us hunting for mini beasts in the woodland, making use of classification keys and magnifying glasses to support us. The children found lots of different spiders, snails and even an earwig! After this, we came back in and our leader Clare read us a beautiful story: The Last Tree. The story is about a girl who lives in a world without trees and has stunning illustrations. Using this story to support their thinking, the children then had a time of reflection about their time at Boggle Hole. They then had  to make a nature pledge - promising to do something to protect our planet. The children impressed us with their thoughtfulness. After lunch, we headed onto the beach where the children had a second opportunity to hunt for fossils and explore the rock pools. Both of these activities have been a big hit with the children this week! As the day started to draw to a close, there was time for showers, packing and changing into pirate costumes before a burger for tea and a pirate party. The children (& teachers) showed off their best moves and had a great time celebrating their time away.

We have had a wonderful time away and look forward to our final morning on the beach tomorrow. See you all tomorrow!
