Intent

At Underwood C of E Primary School, we recognise the importance of Physical Education to a child’s physical, cognitive, social and emotional development. We aim to give them the necessary knowledge and skills to make a positive impact in their own mental and physical well-being. Our high quality, progressive curriculum caters for all individuals and will inspire children to lead healthy, active lifestyles as well as encouraging them to develop a life-long love of physical activity.  It is designed to allow children to flourish and develop self-confidence, whether it be through individual, team or competitive based activities.

Implementation

Throughout their time at school, the children learn to develop skills in:

  • Fundamentals
  • Ball skills
  • Team building
  • Yoga
  • Gymnastics
  • Dance
  • Invasion games
  • Swimming
  • Athletics
  • Outdoor Pursuits

Each class engages in two hours of P.E. each week. Additionally, as part of the 'Active 30' initiative, children take part in cardio kids' sessions throughout the week as well as daily active blasts in their classrooms as brain brain breaks in order to stay active and promote concentration.

All children in Years 2 - 5 have a minimum of seven one hour swimming sessions each year to help them surpass the minimum standard of being able to swim 25 metres as well as to help them learn vital life-saving skills.

In Year 4, the children have an opportunity to experience outdoor pursuit activities during a residential visit to Hathersage in Derbyshire. In Years 5 and 6, the children can participate in a wide range of outdoor adventurous activities in a range of residential opportunities.

We work closely with the Selston High School family of schools within the Ashfield Sports Partnership as well as the Eastwood District Sports Association to provide opportunities for pupils of all ages to participate in sporting festivals and competitions.

We take pride in the wide range of extra-curricular sporting clubs we have on offer throughout the year. These include:

  • Football
  • Hockey
  • Cross-Country
  • Athletics
  • Multi-skills
  • Dance
  • Cricket
  • Tennis
  • Rounders
