Early Years Foundation Stage

Here at Underwood Church of England Primary School we recognise that all children are unique and special and we work to help each child flourish and reach their full potential by ‘Being the BEST they can be’. Throughout their learning journey with us, we aim for every child to achieve their BEST by:

Believing – Experiencing – Succeeding – Together

As a whole school we use these four areas to underpin our ‘Learning for Life’ curriculum and ensure they are both implemented from each child’s very first day of school and developed throughout their time with us.

Believing

In the Early Years our aim is to create a learning environment that is safe, secure, nurturing and a place where children can have the confidence to ‘have a go’ and to believe in themselves. We aim to work collaboratively with parents and carers to encourage independent, enthusiastic learners who thrive and reach their full potential from their various starting points.

Experiencing

It is our intent to take into consideration each child’s starting points and their own specific needs as they begin their learning journey so that we can ensure that we provide rich first hand experiences (inside, outside, through school trips and visitors to school) to widen experiences, awe, curiosity and wonder. This will help to enable them to reach those next steps in their learning and be the ‘best they can be.’ We aim to provide an engaging curriculum that maximises opportunities for meaningful cross-curricular links and learning experiences, as well as promoting the unique child by offering extended periods of play and sustained thinking.

Succeeding

We intend to create enabling environments and have warm, skillful adult interactions which support the children as they begin to link learning to their play and exploration right from the start. We believe that high level engagement ensures high level attainment. By the end of the Reception year, our intent is to ensure that all children make at least good progress from their starting points and are equipped with the skills and knowledge to have a smooth transition into Year 1.

Together

We aim to work closely with parents, carers, as a whole school staff and with other outside agencies whose expertise may be needed to ensure that each child achieves their full potential. We aim to teach the importance of our whole school rule ‘Ready, Respectful, Safe.' In the Early Years we will provide a positive ethos in our setting where everyone is respected, supported, successes are celebrated, children are encouraged and where we work together to be our very best.
