RSHE
The Subject Leader for RSHE is Mr. Ashton
At Underwood C of E Primary School, we teach RSHE by meeting the requirements of the National Curriculum. We aim to deliver a high-quality education which teaches pupils to develop skills and knowledge which enable them to access the wider curriculum and prepare them to be a global citizen now and in the future.
We aim to deliver quality first teaching that follows a carefully planned sequence of lessons that allow space and time to talk, reflect, share and experience life together. RSHE is taught in a safe, caring and nurturing way. Building mutual trust and respect between all within the classroom.
RSHE is taught progressively throughout the school and will cover specifics unique to our area. We want children to develop independence, resilience, respect, trust, social justice and tolerance. Teaching is designed to take account of our progression documents to ensure age appropriate content.
The curriculum will demonstrate appropriate subject knowledge and understanding to fulfil the duties of the Relationship and Sex Education (RSE) whereby schools must, ‘provide a balanced and broadly-based curriculum which promotes the spiritual, moral, cultural, mental and physical development of pupils and prepares them for the opportunities and responsibilities and experiences for later life.’
Relationships, Sex and Health Education (RSHE) and Kapow Primary
At our school, we use the Kapow Primary RSE & PSHE scheme to support our teaching of Relationships, Sex and Health Education (RSHE). RSHE helps children develop the knowledge, skills and confidence they need to look after themselves, stay safe and build positive, respectful relationships with others.
The Kapow curriculum is taught from Reception to Year 6 and follows a progressive, spiral approach. This means that key themes are revisited throughout the children's time at primary school, with learning becoming more detailed and age-appropriate as children grow and develop.
What do children learn?
The RSHE curriculum covers a range of important areas, including:
Healthy minds and bodies – understanding physical and mental health, emotions, wellbeing, healthy lifestyles and how to look after ourselves.
Relationships – learning about friendships, families, kindness, respect, communication and what makes relationships positive and healthy.
Keeping safe – understanding personal boundaries, recognising unsafe situations and knowing how and when to ask for help.
Online safety – learning how to use technology safely and responsibly, recognise online risks and make positive choices.
Growing and changing – developing an age-appropriate understanding of how our bodies change as we grow, including puberty and personal hygiene.
Being responsible and independent – developing decision-making skills, understanding responsibilities and preparing children for the next stages of their lives.
How is RSHE taught?
RSHE is taught through regular, planned lessons using a range of age-appropriate activities, discussion and resources.
Children are encouraged to ask questions, share their ideas, listen to different viewpoints and develop the confidence to talk about their feelings, relationships, health and safety.
The curriculum also supports our safeguarding work. Children learn about personal boundaries, appropriate and inappropriate behaviour, how to recognise when something may not feel right and who they can talk to if they are worried.
Working with parents and carers
We recognise that parents and carers play an important role in helping children understand relationships, health, growing up and staying safe. We aim to work in partnership with families and provide clear information about what is taught.
Relationships Education and Health Education are statutory parts of the primary curriculum. Sex education, beyond the elements included within the Science curriculum, is not compulsory at primary school. Kapow provides an optional Year 6 sex education unit which is recommended for Year 6 by the Department for Education.
