At Underwood we follow a systematic approach to phonics using the Monster Phonics program. In Chestnut Class phonics is taught for 20 minutes everyday. During their time in reception the children will learn all 44 phonemes beginning with single letter sounds before moving onto digraphs and trigraphs. 

The best way to support your child is by practising phonics at home. Encourage them to read aloud, sound out words, and blend sounds together. You don’t need to be a phonics expert; simple books and activities can make a big difference. Using pure speech sounds, brief and clear phonemes without extra sounds like ‘uh’ (e.g., ‘sss’ rather than ‘suh’), is crucial for effective blending and spelling.
